Yup, I'm a Public Defender; Devaney On Guns: "I Don’t Have An Answer" - But I Do; Campaign Joy and How You Can Join!
Folks, this campaign is a joy. From marching and dancing in the glorious 4th of July parade in Chelmsford to getting more votes and volunteers every day, I am astonished at how much support there is for the simple premise of this campaign: once people know about the work of the Governor’s Council, they care tremendously, and they know it’s time to elect the first public defender to the Governor’s Council.
I kicked off last weekend with the Wellesley Democratic Town Committee at their weekly standout to protest Dobbs and to stand up for all our democratic values. I held a sign which read, "Freedom From Gun Violence", with no idea what terrible news was to come. I held that sign because I'm committed to doing everything I can as your Governor's Councillor to end gun violence. I worked with a man whose daughter was murdered at Sandy Hook, and have a friend whose son survived the Parkland massacre. We all have to do our part, and a Governor's Councillor can do a lot. At the recent forum on BATV, moderator Sandra Giroux asked our positions on gun safety. My opponent stated, “I don’t have an answer on gun control”, and said she believes solutions lie with the legislature and do not involve the Governor’s Council. She’s wrong. The Governor’s Council has an enormous role to play. We must make sure that our judges have a reasonable interpretation of the Second Amendment that makes it possible to enact, uphold, and enforce reasonable gun safety laws. As your Governor’s Councillor, I will. Watch HERE.
It is just sad that I have to refute the same, tired false charges over and over, as I did again this time. Inexplicably, she continues to insist that I’m not a public defender, even though she knows that the Committee for Public Counsel Services has confirmed that I am. Watch HERE. She also continues to state that the Governor is “supporting” her. It is well known that the Governor’s Council is a check and balance on the Governor. So no Governor would “support” a Governor’s Councillor. It’s a misleading statement, and very troubling that she said that again, not once but twice in the last forum. I was very proud to be there as the endorsed candidate of the Billerica Democratic Town Committee. Click HERE to see the debate in full.
Our work in the field is growing, and we had a great canvass in Wayland with Senator Becca Rausch! Just as in Wayland, 1 out of 5 Brookline Democratic primary voters in 2022 did not vote for Governor's Councillor, so we need to make sure we tell those voters about this critical race. I'm delighted to have Jesse Mermell join us for our canvass in Brookline on July 28, 2024 starting at 1:00 p.m. Click HERE to sign up. To join upcoming canvasses in other towns email me at Mara@MaraDolan.com! If you join us, I promise you’ll get to see for yourself just how powerful it is to say, “If you care who our judges are, you need to care who your Governor’s Councillor is.”
A really easy way to help reach voters is to forward this email to folks you know in District 3. Everyone knows someone in District 3! Click HERE for a map and list of its 31 cities and towns. We also have postcards going all over the district! If you’d like to send postcards to make sure voters know about this race, and that it all comes down to the primary on September 3rd because there is no Republican on the ballot, please email me at Mara@MaraDolan.com!
Lawn signs are sprouting up everywhere, and I want to thank all the lawn sign captains in towns all over the district making sure people who request a lawn sign get one, along with volunteer Kathryn Roy who makes sure that runs as smoothly as possible. If you’d like a lawn sign, email me at Mara@MaraDolan.com.
Voting by mail has already begun in many towns! It’s essential that we have the resources we need to reach those early voters. Please make a contribution todayto make sure we can run our ads, text voters, get lawn signs out, and send postcards. Your contribution will make a measurable difference. Remember, we only need 50 more votes per town to win. Helping us reach just a few more voters will make a big difference.
Speaking of our ads, they're coming soon, so watch here for sneak peeks! We’ve got to get our message to voters, and with your contribution we will. Having so many supporters together to tape the ad was another joy, as was marching right in front of Trend n Motion for the Chelmsford 4th of July parade, and my great honor to dance with them. Check it out here. Vote for me. I promise to bring more music and dancing!
Take Care,
Mara
