Great Press On Watertown Debate Win, My Piece in GBH, and Reaching Every Voter with Our First Ad!
I eagerly awaited the debate WCA-TV so generously agreed to host, and for those who haven’t had a chance to see it, I urge you to check it out. For a quicker look, here’s the story in Watertown News: Challenger Critical of Longtime Governor's Councilor in State Primary Race. It’s a great recap that really conveys the flavor and substance of the evening. For those who watch the debate until the end, you’ll see that the incumbent made a baseless charge against me when I did not have an opportunity to respond. She later admitted to WCA-TV that she was “mistaken”, and WCA-TV posted a disclaimer on their post.
One of my favorite quotes in the story on the debate was when I said, “Sometimes you have to stand alone on principle, and I am no stranger to that. But I also know the power of building consensus, working with others, finding common ground, and working together to achieve our shared objectives. Without that on the Council we do not have the representation we might have otherwise.” As the Globe piece by Yvonne Abraham made clear, which Watertown News linked in their coverage, other Governor’s Councillors are speaking very plainly about the incumbent’s difficulties in working with her colleagues. We can’t afford two more years of chaos, especially when we have an opportunity to elect a principled fighter for justice.
I’ve spoken repeatedly on this campaign about the role our courts play in the opiate crisis, and that it’s time to hold them accountable. I wrote a piece about it for GBH, Mass Courts Should Be Held Accountable for the Opiate Crisis. With record opiate overdoses and deaths last year, we are not getting better. We are getting worse. It is critical that we make sure all judges and Parole Board members understand the science of addiction and work to support recovery.
Special shoutout to my campaign team, who are helping us get the word out about this campaign and the issues we are raising like never before. And an extra shoutout to all the activists who have supported me from the time they knew what this campaign is all about, and spreading the word far and wide.
I had the honor and pleasure of joining a statewide zoom for Indivisible Massachusetts last night. It was a great discussion about the importance of the Governor’s Council and how badly we need change, along with sharing our outrage at the incumbent's recent vote to confirm an anti-choice judge for our Superior Courts. Thank you most kindly to whoever said, “Mara, the whole state is rooting for you to win!” I feel all your support every day, and know we have the wind at our back.
Nancy Quartaro-Kattan and I have been best friends since 9th grade. I was so proud and happy to have her join me at Nazda Alam's Annual Party for Women that I just had to include this wonderful pic. Friends forever, forever friends.
Let’s get this done. Our first digital ad will begin airing very soon. We are able to reach voters for just $1 a person. Your $10 contribution means we will reach 10 voters. $50 means 50 voters, and so on. Make a contribution today, knowing that every single dollar will mean one more voter who knows about our campaign. We can win this, and we will with your support. I’ll send you the ad the next time I write, which will be very soon.
Take Care,
Mara
